Jastorf influences on Oksywie culture

Oksywie culture was evolving in the younger pre-Roman period in northern Poland. More precisely it was localised on the terrains of Chełmno Land, lower Powiśle and, since A2 phase, also on the territory of Western Pomerania. It is considered that the origin of the Oksywie culture is connected to the strong influences from the Jastorf culture with addition of the equally essential factor of impact which was Przeworsk culture and some other cultural groups that occupied the northern coast of Baltic Sea. Probably remaining under the influences, which were arriving from different directions, was the main reason of its regional diversity. The impact of Jastorf culture during the process of development seems to be especially significant. To a large degree it came from the nadodrzańska group, what is noticeable in practising some specific forms of funerary ritual and the presence of the western provenance components of funerary equipment. Among the most significant proofs of those influences we can distinguish three “especially” Jastorf types of brooches and different buckles, also very characteristic for that group, which probably should be associated with the terrains of central Germany. In addition to that, the very rare but distinctive findings are also parts of adornment. Moreover, some essential similarities were also recognised in vessel forms and manner of their ornamentation. The very strong influences coming from Jastorf territories were constantly leaving their stamp on the image of the Oksywie culture to the moment of its final disappearance during the decline of the younger pre-Roman period.

Kultura oksywska rozwijała się w młodszym okresie przedrzymskim na terenie północnej Polski, zajmując obszary Ziemi Chełmińskiej, dolnego Powiśla oraz od fazy A2 terytorium Pomorza Zachodniego. Jej powstanie wiązane jest z silnymi oddziaływaniami kultury jastorfskiej, przy równie istotnym dla jej genezy udziale kultury przeworskiej oraz ugrupowań zajmujących północne wybrzeże Morza Bałtyckiego. Płynące z wielu kierunków oddziaływania legły u podstaw jej znacznego zróżnicowania regionalnego. Szczególnie istotne w tej kwestii wydają się być wpływy jastorfskie, pochodzące w dużej mierze od grupy nadodrzańskiej i przejawiające się w praktykowaniu pewnych specyficznych form rytuału pogrzebowego oraz w występowania charakterystycznych elementów wyposażenie grobowego o proweniencji zachodniej. Wśród najbardziej wymownych dowodów tych wpływów można wymienić trzy „wybitnie” jastorfskie typy fibul (kulkowe, z koszulką na kabłąku oraz o stopniowatym kabłąku) oraz równie charakterystyczne dla tego wywodzonego z obszaru środkowych Niemiec ugrupowania, klamry, a także niezwykle rzadko ozdoby. Istotne podobieństwa zauważalne są także w specyficznych formach naczyń oraz sposobie ich ornamentowania. Silne wpływy jastorfskie będą odciskały swoje piętno na obrazie kultury oksywskiej, aż po jej zanik u schyłku młodszego okresu przedrzymskiego.
