The use of stage directions in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet

This thesis discusses the implied stage directions in Romeo and Juliet in order to find out possible interpretations of the play’s text. The first chapter includes a presentation of the characteristics of the Elizabethan theatre which are crucial while talking about Shakespeare’s plays. The second chapter is the analysis of stage directions in chosen passages from the play. It proves that even short insignificant passages contain a large number of stage directions and shows the various ways in which the type of stage directions that were given by the poet can be understood by a theatrical director.

Poniższa praca omawia możliwe interpretacje wskazówek scenicznych w sztuce Williama Szekspira "Romeo i Julia". W pierwszym rozdziale zawarty jest opis teatru Elżbietańskiego wraz z jego cechami charakterystycznymi. Drugi rozdział to analiza wskazówek scenicznych z wybranych fragmentów sztuki, w której nawet najmniej znaczące fragmenty mogą być interpretowane na różne sposoby.
