This master thesis studies sanctions imposed against Russia in the light of the crisis in Ukraine in order to answer the research question: What is the originality of the European Union, a smart power, as an actor imposing sanctions?.In a first part, the theories of smart power and of the European Union smart sanctions are developed. The analysis is then based on the comparison between the European Union sanctions with the United States and other countries sanctions.
