Spanish words and loanwords in Victor Hugo’s journey to the Pyrenees

Le mémoire de licence ci-présenté a pour but d’expliquer comment et pourquoi les écrivains, comme p.ex. Victor Hugo, utilisent les emprunts linguistiques, notamment dans les récits et souvenirs de voyage. Pour répondre à ces questions nous avons analysé les hispanismes employés par Hugo dans sa description du voyage vers les Pyrénées en 1843. Les emprunts sont considérés par maints linguistes comme un moyen d’enrichir la langue emprunteuse et d’introduire les concepts nouveaux. En littérature, les emprunts sont employés par les romanciers et poètes comme les synonymes et les néologismes pour diversifier le vocabulaire et le discours. En outre, les emprunts, comme les hispanismes d’Hugo, servent à capter et garder l’attention du lecteur car ils ont l’allure exotique et l’effet de nouveauté. Et finalement, les emprunts, que l’on trouve dans la littérature de voyage, dessinent bien la couleur locale et la spécificité de la culture différente. Pour résumer, ces notions étrangères ont des fonctions multiples et nous pouvons les trouver partout, comme ils font partie de la longue histoire des langues et des échanges interculturels. Le Voyage vers les Pyrénées d’Hugo peut être un bon exemple de cette épopée linguistique.

In this short study we try to present why and how writers, as Victor Hugo as an example, use loanwords, especially in the travel literature. To answer all this questions we have analyzed Spanish loanwords and words used by Victor Hugo in his Journey to the Pyrenees, a description of his trip in 1843. Loanwords used to be thought by many linguists as a way to enrich the language and a way to introduce new concepts. In literature, loanwords are employed as synonyms to diversify the language and the discourse. Furthermore, loanwords, as Victor Hugo’s Spanish words, can capture attention of the readers because they sound exotic and the have novelty effect. Ultimately, loanwords that can be found in the travel literature help to describe better different cultures and they recreate an exotic atmosphere of the visited places. To sum up, these foreign elements have more than one application and we can find them almost everywhere. Loanwords are a part of a huge history of the intercultural communication and the language itself, and Victor Hugo’s Journey to the Pyrenees is just a small piece of this bigger process of language borrowing and language evolution.

Przedstawiony tutaj licencjat ma na celu wyjaśnienie, w jaki sposób i dlaczego pisarze, na przykładzie Wiktora Hugo, posługują się w swoich dziełach słowami zapożyczonymi z innych języków, szczególnie w opowiadaniach i wspomnieniach podróżniczych. By odpowiedzieć na te pytania, zostały przeanalizowane hispanizmy użyte przez Wiktora Hugo w jego “Podróży po Pirenejach”, będącej opisem wyprawy z 1843 roku.Zapożyczenia są uważane przez wielu lingwistów, jako sposób wzbogacenia języka poprzez wprowadzenie nowych pojęć i znaczeń. W literaturze zapożyczenia są używane jako wyrażenia często synonimiczne i jako neologizmy, by zróżnicować leksykę i język. Ponadto zapożyczenia, tak jak hispanizmy Wiktora Hugo, służą do tego, by przyciągnąć i utrzymać uwagę czytelnika. Mają one bowiem posmak nowości i brzmią egzotycznie. I na koniec, zapożyczenia, które znajdujemy w książkach podróżniczych, pomagają nakreślić koloryt lokalny i dobrze przedstawić inną kulturę. Podsumowując, te obce elementy językowe posiadają wiele różnych funkcji językowych i możemy je spotkać prawie wszędzie. Stanowią one nieodłączny element długiej historii rozwoju języka i wymian międzykulturowych. “Podróż po Pirenejach” Wiktora Hugo może być dobrym tego przykładem.
