The possibilities of reporting third culture elements in the Thomas Keneally novel "Schindlers Ark" and its Polish translation by Tadeusz Stanek

The thesis is supposed to depict the possibilities of reporting third culture elements in the novel by Thomas Keneally “Schindler’s Ark” and its Polish translation by Tadeusz Stanek (“Lista Schindlera").Its theoretical part presents the material and methodology as well as defines the model recipients of the original and target texts. It contains description of cultural elements in both language versions of the novel. In the second chapter, there are different definitions of third culture provided by authors. It contains also various techniques which can be used by the translator for transferring cultural elements into the target text. In the last chapter, I analyse the material by comparing the techniques used by the author and the translator to present third culture elements. I compare whether these elements evoke the same effect in the original and target recipients.

Celem niniejszej pracy dyplomowej jest analiza sposobów przedstawienia elementów trzeciej kultury w angielskim oryginale i polskim przekładzie powieści Thomasa Keneally’ego pt. „Schindler’s Ark” (przekład autorstwa Tadeusza Stanka pt. „Lista Schindlera”). Pierwszy rozdział stanowi część teoretyczną, w której przedstawiony został materiał badawczy. Zostały nakreślone także warstwy kulturowe występujące w tekstach wyjściowym i docelowym oraz określony modelowy odbiorca tychże. Następnie opisano metodologię badawczą, która została zastosowana w części praktycznej.Drugi rozdział ma na celu przedstawienie różnych poglądów na trzecią kulturę. Zawiera on definicje sformułowane przez kilku autorów. Następnie przedstawione zostały techniki i strategie, które tłumacz ma do dyspozycji przy radzeniu sobie z problemami kulturowymi w przekładzie.Rozdział trzeci to praktyczna analiza porównawcza przekładu elementów trzeciej kultury. Zostały one podzielone na kategorie pod względem ich pochodzenia i warstwy znaczeniowej. Tabele przedstawiają sposoby ich przedstawienia w oryginale i przekładzie, które zostały następnie skomentowane, a wyniki ich analizy zostały zawarte we wnioskach.
