The Architectural Terminology in the "On Buildings" of Procopius of Caesarea

"On Buildings" (Περὶ κτισμάτων) is one of the three works of Procopius of Caesarea (Προκόπιος ὁ Καισαρεύς), the most significant historian of the times of Justinian I. This is a panegyric on the emperor's building activity.The subject of this thesis is an analysis of the vocabulary used by Procopius to describe architecture in the "On Buildings". This theme is motivated by the lack of a comprehensive discussion of this question.This task will be accomplished by a philological analysis which will allow to distinguish groups of architectural terms. Then, they will be subdivided into auxiliary categories, according to which, the collected data will be discussed. This commentary, which is the main part of the text, will be supplemented by two lists (alphabetical and thematic) at the end of the work. In addition, it will be preceded by the chapters devoted to the principal research issues related to the work "On Buildings" and the artistic context of Justinian's reign. The thesis will be equipped with a selection of illustrations showing some of the presented pieces of art as well.

"O budowlach" (Περὶ κτισμάτων ) to jedno z trzech dzieł Prokopiusza z Cezarei (Προκόπιος ὁ Καισαρεύς), najważniejszego historyka czasów Justyniana I. Dzieło to jest panegirykiem na cześć działalności budowlanej tego cesarza.Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza słownictwa, jakim posłużył się Prokopiusz, opisując architekturę w "O budowlach". Podjęcie tego tematu uzasadnia przede wszystkim brak całościowego opracowania tej kwestii.Do realizacji tego zadania wykorzystana zostanie analiza filologiczna, umożliwiająca wyodrębnienie grup określeń dotyczących architektury. Następnie zostaną one podzielone na kategorie pomocnicze, według których zebrany materiał będzie omawiany. Komentarz ten, będący główną częścią pracy, uzupełniony zostanie przez dwa spisy (alfabetyczny oraz tematyczny) zamieszczone przy końcu pracy. Ponadto wszystko to poprzedzą rozdziały poświęcone głównym problemom badawczym związanym z dziełem "O budowlach" oraz kontekstowi artystycznemu panowania Justyniana. Praca będzie nadto zaopatrzona w wybór ilustracji ukazujących niektóre z prezentowanych dzieł.
