The influence of music culture on shaping Icelanders’ identity in perspective of Icelandic cultural heritage management

Iceland is a country with extremely rich culture. Among the most significant components of modern Icelandic culture are music-making, musical education and great music tradition.In XX century, Icelandic music has become an export good in a way, which was able to promote the country excellently and to improve the world’s awareness of Iceland as original island. Despite of low population, Iceland has huge and differential circle of musicians. This paper main goal was to answer why music makes so great value for Icelanders, what are its functions and if it is true that people of Iceland identify with their music so much that they could make it a part of their cultural heritage. The issue of cultural heritage management is directly connected with this topic, and in this paper it is described in reference to Icelandic culture and history of island’s music.Music festivals are highly regular and diverse in Iceland, such as Icelandic music scene. During research for these matters, I have conducted the qualitative interviews with Icelandic musicians and bands, but also with people engaged in music industry. In addition, I have chosen an active observation as I was able to participate in music festivals and events. This kind of research has let me discover the specifics and variety of Icelandic music from Icelanders’ point of view, as well as to prove its importance in individual, collective and socio-cultural aspect. The research has also allowed me to explore the overall character of Icelandic music culture and led to the conclusion that it has strengthened the sense of identity but still determines important challenges in terms of tourism and change management in icelandic culture as a whole.

Islandia jest wyspą o niezwykle bogatej kulturze. Do najbardziej znaczących elementów kształtujących obecną postać kultury islandzkiej należą twórczość, edukacja i tradycja muzyczna.W XX w. muzyka islandzka stała się dobrem eksportowym, które wpłynęło ogromnie na promocję kraju na świecie. Mimo niewielkiej populacji wyspy, działa tam liczne grono zróżnicowanych artystów muzycznych.Niniejsza praca próbuje znaleźć odpowiedź na pytanie, dlaczego muzyka stanowi dla mieszkańców wyspy tak ogromną wartość, jakie pełni funkcje i czy Islandczycy identyfikują się z nią na tyle, by móc uznać kulturę muzyczną za element islandzkiego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Bezpośrednio z tym związana jest problematyka zarządzania dziedzictwem, która w tej pracy zostaje przybliżona w kontekście kultury i historii islandzkiej muzyki. Muzyczne festiwale odbywają się na Islandii regularnie i są tak różnorodne, jak sama scena muzyczna. Podczas badania tych zagadnień przeprowadziłam wywiady jakościowe z muzykami i zespołami islandzkimi, a także z osobami zaangażowanymi w przemysł muzyczny, oraz prowadziłam obserwację uczestniczącą w trakcie festiwali. Tego rodzaju badania pomogły mi odkryć specyfikę i bogactwo islandzkiej muzyki z perspektywy samych Islandczyków, dowieść jej znaczenia w wymiarze osobistym, wspólnotowym, a także społeczno-kulturowym. Przeprowadzone badania pozwoliły także odkryć całościowy obraz kultury muzycznej, która wpłynęła na wzmocnienie tożsamości islandzkiej, lecz także jest powodem wielu problemów i wyzwań związanych z ogromnym rozwojem turystyki na wyspie i zarządzaniem zmianami w obszarze kultury islandzkiej.
