The Situation of the Armenian Minority in Turkey After 1923. The Efforts to Preserve the National Identity in the Context of the Socio-Political Changes

Celem niniejszej pracy jest identyfikacja wyzwań, jakie napotyka społeczność ormiańska w Turcji oraz do jakiego stopnia wpływają na nie bieżące nastroje społeczne i krajowe ustawodawstwo. W pracy przedstawiono genezę obecności Ormian na Półwyspie Anatolijskim i ich aktywność w życiu społecznym i politycznym, począwszy od schyłku istnienia Imperium Osmańskiego po czasy współczesne. Przeprowadzone badania prowadzą do wniosku, że tureccy Ormianie nadal podlegają dyskryminacji w aspekcie prawnym i społecznym, wynikającej z polityki mniejszościowej państwa, sięgającej czasów osmańskich stygmatyzacji ludności nietureckiej i niemuzułmańskiej, a także sporów dotyczących wydarzeń z 1915 roku.

The aim of this paper is to identify the challenges currently faced by the Armenian community in Turkey and to what extent they are affected by the current social tendencies and the national legislation. This study presents the origin of he Armenian presence at the Anatolian Peninsula and their involvement in the social and political life from the end of the existence of the Ottoman Empire to the present day. The research leads to the conclusion that Turkish Armenians are still subject to discrimination in both legal and social terms resulted from the state’s minority policy, the stigmatization of non-Turkish and non-muslim communities that dates backs to the Ottoman Times, as well as the disputes regarding the 1915 events.
