Determinants of development and causes of regression of trolleybus transport in Polish cities

Trolejbusy to obok autobusów, tramwajów i metra główny środek komunikacji zbiorowej we współczesnych polskich miastach. Praca skupia się na zbadaniu korzyści i problemów funkcjonowania trolejbusów oraz historii komunikacji trolejbusowej na świecie i w Polsce, próbując odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego do początków XXI wieku przetrwały tylko 3 polskie sieci (z 14 istniejących). Podjęto także próbę analizy ich rozwoju oraz przedstawiono obecną strukturę i wybrane aspekty ich funkcjonowania. Uwzględniono wpływ środków z Unii Europejskiej na ich kształt oraz wskazano na perspektywy i kierunki rozwoju. Pracę wykonano na podstawie analizy literatury, z wykorzystaniem danych umieszczonych w Internecie przez urzędy miasta, zarządy komunikacji i operatorów, które zostały następnie porównane przy wykorzystaniu metod statystycznych, kartograficznych i grafowych.

Apart from a bus, a tram and a subway, a trolleybus is the main means of public transport in contemporary Polish cities. The thesis focuses on the benefits and problems of trolleybuses and the history of trolleybus transport in the world and Poland, trying to answer the question why only 3 Polish networks (out of 14) survived until the beginning of the 21st century. An attempt was made to analyse their development. The current structure and selected aspects of their functioning were also presented in the thesis. The impact of EU funds on their shape was taken into account and perspectives and directions of development were indicated. The work is based on a literature analysis and data published on the Internet by municipal offices, transport authorities and operators. Data were compared using statistical, cartographic and graph methods.
