Immunotherapy in food allergy. Review of selected literature from 2011-2019

Wstęp: Ze względu na ciągły wzrost liczby osób cierpiących na alergię pokarmową istnieje paląca potrzeba wprowadzenia skutecznych i zróżnicowanych metod leczenia w tym zakresie. Unikanie alergenów – jakkolwiek niewątpliwie skuteczne – nie jest bowiem do końca możliwe.Cel pracy: Przeprowadzenie przeglądu piśmiennictwa z lat 2011-2019 na temat immunoterapii w alergii pokarmowej, by ocenić czy jest ona terapeutyczną metodą przyszłości oraz jakie są możliwości i horyzont czasowy wprowadzenia jej do szerszego niż badania kliniczne zastosowania. Materiały i metody: Zastosowano metodę przeglądu literatury z kilku baz internetowych (ProQuest, Web of Science, PubMed, GoogleScholar). Do końcowej analizy wybrano 12 publikacji anglojęzycznych, które przedstawiają aktualny stan wiedzy i badań na temat immunoterapii w alergii pokarmowej.Podsumowanie: Mimo wielu opracowań naukowych i badań klinicznych na temat zastosowań immunoterapii w leczeniu alergii pokarmowej, nie ustalono jeszcze standardów teurapeutycznych ani nie wybrano najlepszej opcji leczenia. Podejścia terapeutyczne, stosowane na razie jedynie w różnych fazach badań klinicznych, rokują jednak na nieodległe wprowadzenie immunoterapii do lecznictwa otwartego. Wnioski: Stały wzrost zainteresowania tematem, wzmożona aktywność grup badawczych, oraz pozytywne wyniki badań klinicznych sprawiają, że szersze zastosowanie immunoterapii w leczeniu alergii pokarmowej wydaje się nieuchronne.

Introduction: Due to the continuous increase in the number of people suffering from food allergy, there is an urgent need to introduce effective and varied methods of treatment in this area. Avoidance of allergens - however undoubtedly effective - is not possible.Aim of the study: To conduct a review of the 2011-2019 literature on immunotherapy in food allergy, to assess whether it is a therapeutic method of the future and what are the possibilities and time horizon of its use beyond clinical trials.Materials and methods: The method used was a review of the relevant literature using several internet databases (ProQuest, Web of Science, PubMed, GoogleScholar). 12 English-language publications, which present the current state of knowledge and research on immunotherapy in food allergy, were selected for the final analysis.Summary: Despite many scientific studies and clinical trials on the use of immunotherapy in the treatment of food allergy, its standards have not yet been established, nor the best therapeutic option has been selected. Therapeutic approaches, applied only at different stages of clinical trials, suggest, however, that the immunotherapy may soon be introduced to the general public.Conclusions: The sustained increase in interest in the subject, increased activity of research groups, and positive results of clinical trials make use of immunotherapy in the treatment of food allergy seem inevitable.
