Christianity in the Old English Poem "Andreas"

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest udowodnienie tezy, że staroangielski poemat religijny Andreas odzwierciedla dobrze rozwinięte i spójne chrześcijaństwo, ukazując wiele aspektów tejże wiary. W pierwszym rozdziale zostało przedstawione niezbędne dla pracy tło historyczno-literackie, to znaczy historia chrystianizacji Wysp Brytyjskich oraz początki literatury na tymże obszarze, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sposobu, w jaki została w niej przedstawiona wiara chrześcijańska. Kolejny rozdział zawiera na początku ważne informacje oraz krótkie streszczenie samego poematu, natomiast w dalszej części zostają omówione zależności pomiędzy tymże utworem a Beowulfem oraz innymi wierszami z tej samej epoki. Trzeci, a zarazem ostatni, rozdział ma największe znaczenie, gdyż skupia się na samym poemacie Andreas, a także na dogłębnej analizie tegoż utworu.

The aim of the following thesis is to prove that the Old English religious poem, Andreas, is an embodiment of well-developed and coherent Christianity, depicting numerous elements of the Christian faith. The first chapter provides the necessary historical and literary background for the thesis - the history of the Christianisation of the British Isles and the early beginnings of literature on the said territory, with emphasis on how the Christian faith was portrayed in it. In the subsequent chapter some significant information on the poem and a short summary of its content are given at the beginning and its relationship to Beowulf and some other Old English poetic works are discussed thereafter. The third chapter is the most crucial one in the thesis, because it focuses only on Andreas and is devoted to a profound analysis of the work.
