Przekład humoru jako wyzwanie dla tłumacza – analiza porównawcza amerykańskiego serialu komediowego That 70s show i jego polskiego tłumaczenia

This thesis focuses on the challenges of the translation of jokes from English into Polish in the American sitcom That ‘70s show. Its objectives are to discuss problems with translatability of humor in AVT, investigate the translation techniques used and assess the possibility of humor translation. The study consists of four chapters, the first three are purely theoretical, the fourth is a practical one. Chapter 1 is concerned with the topic of humor, its definition, three main classifications and its place in Translation Studies. The reader is presented with techniques of humor translation and the classification of jokes by Zabalbeascoa (1996,) which forms the methodology for the analysis in Chapter 4. Chapter 2 is devoted to the topic of Audiovisual Translation, its modes and constraints they may pose. The aim of Chapter 3 is to present the topic of cultural references and provide the reader with the techniques used by translators to render them. Chapter 4 focuses on the analysis of humorous scenes from the corpus. Thanks to the study conducted we are able to make some observations about the translator’s decision making process, learn what was behind each decision and compare to what extent the translated joke preserved its hilariousness.

Niniejsza praca magisterska skupia się na problemach w przekładzie treści komicznych w polskiej wersji amerykańskiego serialu komediowego That ‘70s show. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie trudności z tłumaczeniem humoru w przekładzie audiowizualnym, analiza technik tłumaczeniowych oraz ocena przekładalności humoru. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów – trzech teoretycznych i jednego praktycznego. Tematem rodziału 1 jest humor. Przedstawiona jest jego definicja, trzy główne teorie humoru oraz jego miejsce w przekładzie. W rozdziale są też opisane strategie tłumaczenia humoru i klasyfikacja żartów, która posłuży za kryterium podziału materiału w rozdziale 4. Rozdział 2 jest poświęcony przekładowi audiowizualnemu, jego rodzajom i ograniczeniom jakie mogą powodować. Celem rozdziału 3 jest zaprezentowanie tematu odniesień kulturowych oraz technik tłumaczeniowych stosowanych w ich przekładzie. Rozdział 4 to analiza treści humorystycznych z korpusu. Przeprowadzona analiza pozwala na wgłebienie się w process decyzyjny tłumacza, zrozumienie co stoi za poszczególnymi wyborami i porównanie do jakiego stopnia dana treść humorystyczna zachowała komizm w tłumaczeniu.
