Pan Tadeusz – est-il traduisible ? Analyse comparative des traductions françaises de Pan Tadeusz d’Adam Mickiewicz

Le présent travail propose la réflexion sur la traduction comme un pont entre deux cultures éloignées sur l’exemple de six traductions françaises de Pan Tadeusz d’Adam Mickiewicz. Ce poème fameux écrit en alexandrin de treize syllabes est une œuvre ancrée dans la culture polonaise et appartient à la catégorie des textes qui posent de multiples défis traductologiques. Notre recherche tente de faire le point sur les solutions proposées par les traducteurs français dans le cas des écarts linguistiques, culturelles, historiques et temporelles entre la France et l’ancienne Pologne du début du XIXe siècle. Dans le premier chapitre de notre étude nous nous penchons sur la position de la littérature polonaise en France à partir de XIXe siècle et sur la réception des œuvres de Mickiewicz par les critiques littéraires français. Le deuxième chapitre traitera des problèmes théoriques de traduction. L’analyse propre des traductions françaises aura lieu dans le dernier chapitre. Elle se focalisera sur le titre de l’œuvre, les noms propres, la stylisation du langage des personnages, les archaïsmes et les faits culturels. Dans la conclusion, nous confronterons les stratégies de chaque traducteur et déduirons quel traducteur devrait être le plus apprécié par le lecteur français.

The purpose of the thesis is the reflection about the translation as the bridge between two different cultures based on the example of six French translations of Adam Mickiewicz’s poem « Pan Tadeusz ». The famous poem composed of thirteen syllables is deeply rooted in Polish culture and belongs to the category of texts which pose many translation challenges. Our research tries to compare the solutions proposed by French translators for linguistic, cultural, historical and temporal differences between France and the Poland from the early 19th century. In the first chapter, we will focus on the position of Polish literature in France since the 19th century with particular emphasis on the opinion of French critics on the work of Adam Mickiewicz. In the second chapter, we will discuss theoretical issues of translation studies. In the third chapter, we will conduct a proper analysis of French translations, focusing on the title, proper names, stylization of the language of the characters, archaisms and cultural elements. We will also discuss the problem of the translation of the Polish alexandrine. In the conclusion, we will summarize the general strategies of each translator and we will present the translation, which in our opinion could be the most appealing to the French reader.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest refleksja nad tłumaczeniem jako pomostu między dwoma oddalonymi kulturami na przykładzie sześciu francuskich tłumaczeń Pana Tadeusza Adama Mickiewicza. Słynny poemat napisany 13-zgłoskowcem jest dziełem głęboko zakorzenionym w kulturze polskiej i należy do kategorii tekstów, które stawiają złożone wyzwania traduktologiczne. W naszej analizie zestawimy i skomentujemy propozycje francuskich tłumaczy w odniesieniu do różnic językowych, kulturowych, historycznych i czasowych między Francją a Polską z początku XIX wieku. W pierwszym rozdziale skupimy się na pozycji literatury polskiej we Francji od XIX wieku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem opinii francuskich krytyków literackich na temat twórczości Adama Mickiewicza. W drugim rozdziale poruszymy zagadnienia teoretyczne z dziedziny traduktologii. W trzecim rozdziale przeprowadzimy właściwą analizę tłumaczeń francuskich skupiając się na tytule, nazwach własnych, stylizacji języka postaci, archaizmach oraz elementach kulturowych. Poruszymy również problem przekładu polskiego 13-zgłoskowca. W konkluzji zestawimy ogólne strategie i metody każdego z tłumaczy oraz przedstawimy wersję francuską, która mogłaby najbardziej spodobać się francuskiemu czytelnikowi.
