The untranslatability of cultural elements connected to everyday life in the Polish Peoples Republic

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza strategii i procedur tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych związanych z życiem codziennym w Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej, które zostały wykorzystane przez tłumaczy wybranych dzieł literackich, oraz refleksja dotycząca nieprzekładalności analizowanych elementów kulturowych. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi teoretyczną prezentację dotyczącą powiązania języka z kulturą oraz refleksji nad kulturą w dziedzinie badań nad przekładem. W rozdziale zawarta została również definicja elementów kulturowych wraz z ich klasyfikacją. Rozdział kończy się krótką historią Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej oraz odnosi się do języka i kultury w kontekście okresu komunizmu w Polsce. Drugi rozdział skupia się na problemie przetłumaczalności i nieprzetłumaczalności oraz odnośnych poglądach teoretyków tłumaczenia. Przedstawione są również strategie i procedury tłumaczeniowe, które mogą być zastosowane w przypadku tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych. Trzeci rozdział przedstawia analizę wybranych przez tłumaczy procedur i strategii tłumaczenia elementów kulturowych związanych z życiem codziennym w Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej, które obecne są w wybranych dziełach literackich.

The aim of the thesis is to analyse the strategies of translating the cultural elements connected to everyday life in the Polish People’s Republic, used by the translators of the selected literary works, and to reflect on the untranslatability of those elements. The first chapter presents a theoretical framework of how language and culture are intertwined, and discusses the cultural turn. It also includes the definition and classification of culture-specific references. The chapter contains a brief historical note about the Polish People’s Republic and it discusses language and culture in the context of the communist period. The second chapter focuses on the issue of translatability and untranslatability, and presents the theories of different translation scholars. Moreover, it comprises translation strategies and procedures that may be developed by the translators in order to deal with culture-specific referents. The third chapter offers an analysis of the elements connected to everyday life in the Polish People’s Republic and the strategies of their translation used by the Polish translators.
