Fatalism in the work of Horacio Quiroga and its sources: biographical, cultural and fantastic

El objetivo principal del presente trabajo es analizar el concepto del fatalismo en siete cuentos del escritor uruguayo, Horacio Quiroga. El trabajo muestra que el fatalismo reflejado en la obra de Quiroga es una consecuencia lógica, que viene de tres fuentes principales: la biografía de Quiroga, el período del modernismo y la influencia de la literatura fantástica. El trabajo se divide en cinco partes. La primera parte se dedica a la idea general de la conexión de Horacio Quiroga con el fatalismo y la definición del fatalismo. En la segunda parte se analiza la vida fatal de Quiroga y sus tres fundamentales aspectos fatales: la muerte, el desdoblamiento de identidad y la selva. La tercera parte explica el concepto del fatalismo dentro del contexto modernista, vinculándolo con el realismo, el naturalismo, el decadentismo y el realismo mágico. En la cuarta parte se introducen las teorías de lo fantástico como una herramienta para el análisis de los cuentos fantásticos. También se explican los rasgos fantástico-fatales en la obra de Quiroga. En la parte final la estrategia fatalista se analiza en los ejemplos, que vienen de siete cuentos quiroguianos.

Niniejsza praca magisterska ma na celu analizę koncepcji fatalizmu w opowiadaniach urugwajskiego piszarza, Horacio Quirogi. Głównym zadaniem tej pracy jest dowiedzenie tego, że fatalizm odzwierciedlony w opowiadaniach Quirogi jest konsekwencją trzech podstawowych źródeł, ktore miały wpływ na jego twórczość: jego biografii, epoki modernizmu i literatury fantastycznej. Praca podzielona jest na pięć części. Pierwsza część stawia sobie za cel definicję fatalizmu. W drugiej części analizowany jest fatalizm w połączeniu z jego biografią, a mianowicie trzema podstawowymi aspektami: śmiercią, rozdwojeniem osobowości i puszczą. Trzecia część natomiast wyjaśnia pojęcie fatalizmu w kontekście epoki modernistycznej, łącząc go z realizmem, naturalizmem, dekadentyzmem i realizmem magicznym. Czwarta część dąży do wyjaśnienia cech fantastyczno-fatalistycznych w twórczości Quirogi oraz przedstawienia fantastycznych teorii jako narzędzi do dalszej analizy poszczególnych opowiadań. W końcowej części fatalistyczna strategia Quirogi jest analizowana w przykładach zebranych z jego siedmiu opowiadań.

The main objective of the present paper is to analyze the concept of fatalism in seven stories of a Uruguayan writer, Horacio Quiroga. The paper demonstrates the evidence that the fatalism reflected in the stories of Quiroga is a logical consequence, caused by three main sources: the biography of Quiroga, the period of modernism and the influence of the fantastic literature. The work is divided into five parts. The first part presents the general idea of Horacio Quiroga's connection with fatalism and the definition of fatalism. In the second part there is analyzed the fatal trajectory of present writer’s s life, focusing on three fundamental aspects: death, identity disorder and jungle. The third part explains the concept of fatalism within the context of the modernist era, linking it with realism, naturalism, decadentism and magical realism. In the fourth part, theories of the fantastic are presented as a tool for the analysis of the fantastic stories. It is also intended to explain the fantastic-fatal features in Quiroga's work. In the final part, his fatalistic strategy is analyzed in the examples collected from seven stories of this writer.
