ANALIZA I TŁUMACZENIE NEOLOGIZMÓW W LITERATURZE SCIENCE FICTION NA PODSTAWIE POWIEŚCI "DIUNA"

This study aims at explaining the notion of neologism in the context of one of its main literary sources and environments – science fiction novels. The first chapter focuses on the definition of neologism and explains its most important roles in language. It also provides information about word formation processes, which are crucial to the production of coinages in English. The second chapter is based on the theory on translating neologisms by Peter Newmark, an English professor of translation at the University of Surrey. The theories proposed by Newmark are applied to the analysis in the succeeding part of the thesis.The third chapter is a detailed analysis of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune. It examines the word formation processes used by the author, and provides possible explanations and etymologies of given words. Neologisms are divided into alphabetically organized categories: compounds, blends and derived forms. The original coinages are compared with their Polish equivalents taken from Polish translation by Marek Marszał.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza powieści Franka Herberta pt. „Diuna” i neologizmów stworzonych przez autora poprzez procesy słowotwórcze. Rozdział pierwszy wyjaśnia pojęcie neologizmu i definiuje jego rolę w języku literackim i języku codziennym. Sekcja tłumaczy jednocześnie na czym polegają procesy słowotwórcze. Rozdział drugi został oparty na teorii prof. Petera Newmarka dot. tłumaczenia neologizmów. Kryteria wyznaczone przez Newmarka w „A Textbook of Translation” zostały zastosowane w analitycznym rozdziale trzecim, będącym studium neologizmów Herberta oraz ich polskich odpowiedników tłumaczonych przez Marka Marszała.
