Characteristics of female characters in the novel "Night Roads" by Gaito Gazdanov

Niniejsza praca została poświęcona problematyce ukazanych w utworze kobiet upadłych w środowisku paryskiego półświatka. Analizie i interpretacji poddano trzy bohaterki powieści „Nocne drogi” (Ночные дороги, 1952). We wstępie pracy została przedstawiona biografia Gajto Gazdanowa, w kontekście zjawiska pierwszej fali emigracji rosyjskiej we Francji. Powieść napisana przez Gazdanowa cechuje się silnymi wątkami autobiograficznymi, co jest ważnym elementem interpretacji utworu. Na gruncie rosyjskim zainteresowanie pisarzem wzrosło dopiero w latach 90. XX wieku, natomiast w Polsce ukazały się przekłady tylko dwu jego powieści. W rozdziale I podjęto się próby interpretacji cech charakteru kreowanych przez Gazdanowa postaci kobiecych, a także przedstawiono okoliczności wprowadzenia do fabuły każdej z bohaterek: Żanny Raldi, Alisy oraz Suzanny. Przybliżona została również funkcja narratora analizowanego utworu. Rozdział II został poświęcony zbadaniu, jak środowisko paryskiego półświatka wpłynęło na postaci kobiece oraz w jakim stopniu determinuje ich postępowanie. Przybliżone zostały również relacje kobiet z bohaterem-narratorem powieści oraz innymi postaciami i ich wpływ na odbiór postaci przez czytelnika. W zakończeniu podsumowano wnioski wynikające z przeprowadzonej analizy oraz cechy wspólne bohaterek. Ukazano również istotne czynniki, które wpłynęły na interpretację postaci kobiecych w powieści „Nocne drogi”. W końcowych partiach pracy zamieszczono streszczenie w języku rosyjskim oraz bibliografię.

The following paper is dedicated to the issues of fallen women in the environment of the Parisian demimonde. Three heroines of the novel “Night Roads” (Ночные дороги, 1952) were analyzed and interpreted. The introduction to the work presents the biography of Gajto Gazdanow in the context of the phenomenon of the first wave of Russian emigration in France. The novel written by Gazdanov is characterized by strong autobiographical themes, which is an important element of the work's interpretation. In Russia, the interest in the writer increased only in the 1990s, while only two of his novels were translated and published in Poland. In Chapter I, attempts were made to interpret the character traits of the female characters created by Gazdanov, as well as the circumstances of introducing each of the characters to the plot. The function of the narrator of the analysed work is also presented. Chapter II is devoted to examining how the environment of the Parisian demimonde influenced female figures and to what extent it determines their behavior. The relations between women and the protagonist-narrator of the novel and other characters and their influence on the reader's perception of the characters were also discussed. The conclusion summarizes the conclusions resulting from the analysis and the common features of the female characters. It also shows important factors that influenced the interpretation of female characters in the novel “Night Roads”. The final parts of the work include a summary in Russian and a bibliography.
