Bezdroża Orientu, albo Staff i Tagore

The main purpose of the essay is to present Leopold Staff's translation of the cycle of poetry by Rabindranath Tagore, entitled "Fruit-Gathering". First of all, some misreading are commented, for example, the question of the source of translation is discussed. As it results from comparative analysis of English original and its German and French translations, Polish version is based on the English version by Tagore himself. Furthermore, the essay concerns the circumstances in which Polish version was done. Moreover, some elements of comparative reading of the original and the translation are read in order to indicate main characters of Tagore's poetry. Subsequently, Staff's translation is presented as a testimonial of the time: Tagore's "Fruit-Gathering" is treated as a book which depicts the oriental imagery that shapes the view of Indian culture according to the aesthetics of modernism and to the interest to the Orient in the first decades of the 20th century.

Artykuł poświęcony dokonanemu przez Leopolda Staffa przekładowi zbioru poetyckiego "Owocobranie" Rabindranatha Tagore’a. Tłumaczenie - jak wynika z analizy omyłek i decyzji translatorskich oraz konfrontacji ze współczesnymi przekładami francuskim i niemieckim - oparte jest na angielskim autoprzekładzie Tagore’a. Tekst ukazuje okoliczności powstania wersji polskiej, zawiera również elementy porównawczej interpretacji oryginału i tekstu docelowego, wskazuje główne cechy poetyki Tagore’a. Tłumaczenie Staffa przedstawia natomiast jako świadectwo epoki: książkę, która przynosi wyobrażenie kultury indyjskiej ukształtowane zgodnie z idealizującymi skłonnościami estetycznymi modernizmu i orientalnymi fascynacjami pierwszych dekad XX wieku.
