"I wasz, i nasz"? : Iwaszkiewicz i polityka
This article discusses the political activity of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, dividing it into three stages. The first stage is the interwar period, when Iwaszkiewicz worked as secretary to Maciej Rataj, a Speaker of the Polish Parliament, and as a diplomat in Copenhagen and Brussels. The next stage is the time of World War II, when Iwaszkiewicz supported many writers and artists and was also involved, with his wife, in helping Jews. After the war, the poet held a wide variety of important positions, including many years as president of the Polish Writers' Union and vice-president of the Pen Club, chair of the Polish Committee for the Defence of Peace and the Polish branch of the Société Europeénne de Culture; he was also a non-partisan member of the Parliament of the Polish People's Republic. At the end of the article, the author seeks to unravel the reasons behind the writer's controversial post-war decisions.
