"Songs from the Labyrinth" as an example of a contemporary reinterpretation of the works of Renaissance composer John Dowland

John Dowland był jednym z najwybitniejszych i najbardziej rozpoznawalnych kompozytorów angielskich przełomu XVI i XVII wieku. Jego twórczość oddziaływała na kolejne pokolenia i stanowiła przedmiot licznych badań. Na przestrzeni lat ukazało się wiele interpretacji dzieł tego renesansowego kompozytora, jednakże na tym gruncie największy rozgłos uzyskała publikacja Gordona Sumnera, znanego szerszej publiczności pod pseudonimem Sting. W związku z tym, celem niniejszej pracy stała się analiza albumu ,,Songs from the Labyrinth" w kontekście twórczości Johna Dowlanda. Został również ukazany życiorys i działalność zarówno renesansowego kompozytora, jak i współczesnego muzyka. Autor przedstawił ponadto analizę dwóch pieśni Johna Dowlanda ,,Flow my tears" oraz ,,In darkness let me dwell" oraz zestawił je ze współczesną reinterpretacją, ukazując zarys tendencji obecnych w albumie.

John Dowland was one of the most outstanding and recognizable English composers of the late 16th and early 17th centuries. His work has influenced subsequent generations and has been the subject of numerous studies. Over the years, many interpretations of the works of this Renaissance composer have been published, however, the publication of Gordon Sumner, known to a wider audience under the pseudonym ‘Sting’, has achieved the greatest fame in this field. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the album ,,Songs from the Labyrinth” in the context of John Dowland's work. The biography and activity of both the Renaissance composer and the contemporary musician are also presented. Moreover, the author presented an analysis of two songs by John Dowland ,,Flow my tears” and ,,In darkness let me dwell” and juxtaposed them with the contemporary reinterpretation, showing the outline of trends present in the album.
