Speech acts represented on the canvases of French artists from the 18th and 19th centuries

The purpose of present BA thesis was to examine the linguistic activity in French painting of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the theoretical part, we have presented models of linguistic communication and then we have pointed out the functions of speech. Next, we have been discussed speech acts. This issue has been developed on the basis of the theory of speech acts by J.L. Austin and John Searle. It was also important to study the elements of non-verbal communication, as this helped us to identify the conversation between the figures in the paintings. The second chapter describes the linguistic activity in painting. We have been distinguished the elements of the painting composition that indicate a speech act. Adopting Vanderveken's classification of speech acts into subtypes, allowed us to analyse the speech acts represented in the paintings.

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej było zbadanie przejawów aktywności językowej w malarstwie francuskich artystów tworzących w wiekach XVIII i XIX. W części teoretycznej pracy zostały zaprezentowane modele komunikacji językowej, a następnie wskazane funkcje wypowiedzi. Kolejno zostały omówione teorie aktów mowy. To zagadnienie opracowano na podstawie teorii J.L. Austina oraz Johna Searla. Istotnym elementem niniejszej pracy było również zbadanie elementów komunikacji niewerbalnej, gdyż pomogło nam to rozpoznać rozmowę pomiędzy postaciami przedstawionymi na obrazach. W drugim rozdziale zostały opisane przejawy działalności językowej w malarstwie. Wyróżniono także elementy kompozycji dzieła, które wskazują na realizację danego aktu mowy. Przyjęcie zaproponowanej przez Vandervekena szczegółowej klasyfikacji aktów mowy pozwoliło nam na analizę aktywności werbalnej utrwalonej na wybranych obrazach.

L'objectif de ce mémoire de licence était d'étudier l'activité langagière dans la peinture française des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Dans la partie théorique, nous avons présenté des modèles de communication linguistique, puis nous avons indiqué les fonctions du langue. Ensuite, nous avons présenté les principales théories des actes de langage : la théorie de J.L. Austin et celle de John Searle. Il était également important d'examiner les éléments de la communication non verbale afin de pouvoir reconnaître la présence d’un échange entre les personnages représentés dans les tableaux. Le deuxième chapitre décrit l'activité langagière dans la peinture. Nous avons mis en lumière ces éléments de la composition du tableau qui indiquent qu’on a affaire à un acte de langage. L'adoption de la classification des actes de langage en sous-types proposée par Vanderveken nous a permis de reconnaître des actes de parole spécifiques représenté dans les peintures choisies.
