From the Greek agora to the stage of the Internet. Analysis of selected TED Talks in terms of classic rhetoric and the modern guide for speakers

The thesis addresses the implementation of rhetorical principles by speakers declaiming their talks at TED conferences. The aim of the thesis is to analyse a selection of TED Talks in relation to the principles of classical rhetoric and the recommendations of Chris Anderson, TED Curator, published in his book 'TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking'. By comparing these two sets of rhetorical rules, which come from significantly different sources, it is possible to create a rich tool for analysing selected TED Talks to see to what extent speakers implement the principles mentioned. The work consists of four chapters; the first introduces the basic principles of ancient rhetoric, the second describes the TED brand. The third chapter is a juxtaposition of the rules of classical rhetoric with tools from the TED handbook; in order to organise the material, the five canons of rhetoric is used as a reference point. The fourth chapter is an analysis of eleven speeches in relation to the principles described in the previous chapter. In this way, a general characteristic of speeches of this type can be made as a conclusion.

Praca podejmuje tematykę realizacji retorycznych zasad przez mówców wygłaszających swoje przemówienia w ramach konferencji TED. Celem pracy jest dokonanie analizy wybranych TED Talków w odniesieniu do zasad retoryki klasycznej oraz zaleceń Chrisa Andersona, kustosza TED-u, opublikowanych w książce pt. „TED Talks. Oficjalny poradnik TED. Jak przygotować wystąpienie publiczne”. Dzięki porównaniu wspomnianych dwóch zbiorów reguł retorycznych, pochodzących z istotnie różniących się źródeł, możliwe jest stworzenie bogatego narzędzia służącego do analizy wybranych TED Talków w celu sprawdzenia, w jakim stopniu mówcy realizują wspomniane zasady. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów; pierwszy zapoznaje z podstawowymi zasadami starożytnej retoryki, drugi z marką TED. Trzeci rozdział to zestawienie reguł klasycznej retoryki z narzędziami pochodzącymi z poradnika TED-u; w celu uporządkowania materiału za punkt odniesienia służy schemat perypatetycki. Czwarty rozdział to analiza jedenastu przemówień w odniesieniu do zasad opisanych w poprzednim rozdziale. Tym sposobem w ramach podsumowania możliwe jest dokonanie ogólnej charakterystyki wystąpień tego typu.
