„Muzeum umysłów, nie tylko kolekcja dzieł” – reforma Alexandra Dornera

In this work I present the biography and achievements of the German art historian, Alexander Dorner. He is an important figure for the history and development of museums in the 20th century. My paper is divided into three chapters, in which I explore the figure of Alexander Dorner, his achievements in Germany and his work in America. In the first chapter, I focus on outlining the ideas professed by the art historian, his criticism of the existing way of exhibiting works in art museums, and his ideas for museum reform. I devoted the second chapter to a description of his innovative ideas and achievements in museum as a director of the Provinzialmuseum in Hanover, and his collaboration with the Russian artist, El Lissitzky. In the third chapter, I presented the events that followed his relocation to America, which is his experience as a director at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, as well as what was happening at the museum before he started working there. In it, I also describe the reforms Dorner brought to the institution and the controversy his actions have faced. I also present his plans for creating a new cultural space, which he planned to implement after leaving the Rhode Island School of Design Museum. I have used English-language publications on Dorner, as well as texts written by him.

W pracy przedstawiam sylwetkę i dokonania niemieckiego historyka sztuki, Alexandra Dornera. Jest to postać ważna dla historii i rozwoju muzealnictwa w XX wieku. Praca podzielona została przeze mnie na trzy rozdziały, w których zgłębiam kolejno: postać Alexandra Dornera, jego dokonania w Niemczech oraz działalność w Ameryce. W pierwszym rozdziale skupiam się na nakreśleniu idei wyznawanych przez historyka sztuki, krytykę dotychczasowego sposobu wystawiania dzieł w muzeach sztuki oraz jego pomysłach na reformę muzealnictwa. Drugi rozdział poświęciłam na opis jego nowatorskich pomysłów i dokonań w zakresie muzealnictwa jako dyrektor Provinzialmuseum w Hanowerze oraz współpracy z rosyjskim artystą, El Lissitzkym. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawiam wydarzenia, które miały miejsce po jego przeprowadzce do Ameryki, czyli doświadczenia z bycia dyrektorem w Rhode Island School of Design Museum, a także to, co działo się w muzeum zanim zaczął w nim pracę. Opisuję w nim również reformy, jakie Dorner wprowadził do tej instytucji, a także kontrowersje, z jakimi spotkały się jego działania. Przedstawiam również jego plany na stworzenie nowej przestrzeni kulturalnej, które planował zrealizować po opuszczeniu Rhode Island School of Design Museum. W pracy wykorzystałam anglojęzyczne publikacje na temat Dornera, a także napisane przez niego teksty.
