Ferdynand Zweig : a liberal in serch of the social context of ideology

Artykuł przedstawia ewolucję ideową Ferdynanda Zweiga, ekonomisty głównego nurtu usiłującego odrodzić myśl liberalną w Polsce w czasie między wojnami światowymi. Liberalny system polityczny postrzegał on jako konsekwencję wzrostu gospodarczego, który powołuje do życia klasę średnią, czyli bazę społeczną liberalizmu. Sądził także, że procesy centralizacji produkcji, niszcząc klasę średnią, podważają również ład liberalny. Przed II wojną światową wyrażał on nadzieję na odrodzenie klasy średniej i w ślad za tym liberalizmu politycznego. W trakcie wojny porzucił te poglądy i w rezultacie zrezygnował także ze społecznej roli ekonomisty oraz ideologa liberalizmu.

The article discusses the ideological evolution of Ferdinand Zweig, a mainstream economist who sought to revive liberal thought in Poland between the two world wars. He perceived the liberal political system as a consequence of economic growth, which brings into being a middle class, the social base of liberalism. He also believed that the processes of centralising production, by destroying the middle class, also undermined the liberal order. Before the Second World War, he expressed the hope of a revival of the middle class and, following this, of political liberalism. During the war, he abandoned these views and, as a result, also gave up his social role as an economist and ideo logue of liberalism.
