(Im)mobilité du sujet : les traces du flâneur dans la littérature d’après la crise économique mondiale

L’article retrace les transformations du flâneur au contrecoup de la crise économique mondiale (2008). Sa première partie consiste en une brève analyse de cette figure moderne et de son histoire. Cette partie de l’essai s’appuie sur l’interprétation du flâneur et du contexte économique qui le détermine par Walter Benjamin. La deuxième partie offre une analyse comparative de deux romans contemporains : l’américain The Financial Lives of the Poets par Jess Walter et le polonais Pustostany par Dorota Kotas. Les sujets les plus importants abordés dans l’article sont la relation redéfinie entre les espaces privés et publics pendant une crise économique, et la condition du vagabond urbain contemporain. Par conséquent, les catégories de mobilité et d’immobilité au sens large sont centrales pour cet article.

The article traces the transformations of the flaneur in the aftermath of the global financial crisis (2008). The first part of the article consists in a short analysis of this modern figure and its history. It builds on Walter Benjamin’s interpretation of the flaneur and the economic context that determines this figure. The second part of the essay consists in a comparative analysis of two novels: The Financial Lives of the Poets (2009), by the American writer Jess Walter, and Pustostany (2019), by Polish writer Dorota Kotas. The key topics discussed in the article are the redefined relationship between private and public spaces during an economic crisis, and the condition of the contemporary urban wanderer. The categories of mobility and immobility, in a broad sense, are therefore central to this essay.
