Commemorative forms in the Congress Poland of the miraculous rescue of the imperial family on October 17, 1888 : immovable monuments

On October 29 (17), 1888, a railway disaster took place in Borki near Kharkiv, during which over 20 people lost their lives. The imperial family was returning to St. Petersburg from a vacation in Crimea on these train. Everyone survived the accident. It was considered a miracle, and October 17th was established as a fest in the Orthodox Church. Gratitude was expressed throughout the empire in various ways: thanksgiving services were held, new churches and chapels were built, old ones were renovated, bells, monuments, icons, banners, and liturgical equipment were funded. Such actions were also undertaken in the Congress Kingdom of Poland. In this article, based on information published in the “Холмско-Варшавский епархиальный вестник” (Hol’msko-Varshavskij eparhial’nyj vestnik) between 1889–1894, the main ways of commemorating this event in the Congress Poland were discussed. The focus was primarily on the newly built churches and chapels, renovations of old ones, construction of fences, bell towers and memorials.

W dniu 29 (17) października 1888 roku, w miejscowości Borki koło Charkowa, doszło do tragicznego wypadku kolejowego. W pociągu tym po- dróżowała rodzina carska: Aleksander III, jego małżonka oraz piątka dzieci. Nikt z nich nie odniósł poważnych obrażeń, co uznano za cud, a 17 paź- dziernika ogłoszono świętem w Cerkwi prawosławnej. Wdzięczność za cu- downe ocalenie monarchy i jego najbliższych okazywano w różny sposób: odprawiano nabożeństwa dziękczynne, wznoszono nowe cerkwie i kapli- ce, przeprowadzano remonty starych, fundowano dzwony, pomniki, iko- ny oraz sprzęt liturgiczny. W niniejszym artykule, na podstawie informacji w „Chełmsko-Warszawskiej Diecezjalnej Gazecie” (Холмско-Варшавский епархиальный вестник”) lat 1889–1894, omówione zostały inicjatywy upa- miętniające to wydarzenie w Królestwie Polskim. Uwaga została skupiona przede wszystkim na nowo wznoszonych i remontowanych cerkwiach, kapli- cach, ogrodzeniach, wieżach dzwonnych i pomnikach.
