Streszczenie to zjawisko towarzyszące operze przez całą jej historię i bardzo długo (w związku z problemami ze zrozumiałością tekstu śpiewanego) używane za nieodzowne uzupełnienie spektaklu, rzadko jednak stanowiące przedmiot namysłu badawczego. Artykuł poświęcony jest różnym funkcjom i typom streszczeń operowych: streszczeniu zintegrowanemu ze spektaklem ("Oedipus Rex" Strawińskiego i Cocteau), streszczeniom o charakterze encyklopedycznym oraz streszczeniom funkcjonalnym, powstałym na potrzeby konkretnych spektakli operowych.

Summary is a phenomenon accompanying opera throughout its history and for a long time (due to the difficulty of understanding the text of the songs), was used as an indispensable complement to the show, yet rarely subjected to analysis by researchers. The article is devoted to the variety of functions and types of opera summaries: integrated with the show ("Oedipus Rex" by Igor Strawiński and Jean Cocteau), encyclopaedic and functional, the latter created to serve the needs of specific opera performances.
