The purpose of this article is to discuss issues related to the functioning of the category of death and the sense of absence after the departure of the mother in volume Matka odchodzi written by Tadeusz Różewicz. The guiding thesis is the assumption that the individual experience the death of a loved person is on the one hand difficult to verbalize, and on the other hand is a literary self-creation, or the creation of his own emotions.
