The attitude of Józef Kremer towards the problem of the chair of bibliography at the Jagiellonian University
The Chair of Bibliography was established at the Philosophical Faculty of Cracow Main School in 1810, at the time of the second reform carried out by Hugo Kołłątaj. After fifty years the chair was dissolved by an imperial order of 5 February 1866. Józef Kremer voiced his opinion on the re-establishment of the chair three times: on 29 January 1866, 19 December 1869 and 14 July 1870. He claimed that the re-establishment of the chair was imperative and that it should be closely related to the university library. He proposed Karol Estreicher (Sen.) for the post of the librarian (i.e. library director) and at the same time professor of bibliography. Kremer’s efforts, however, remained futile and bibliography as an independent subject of study was never again assigned an own chair.
