The article focuses on the somatic aspect of the within Słowacki’s poems, exposing his ambivalent attitude to the corporality, particularly in his later works. On the one hand, the body is discredited for the sake of the spirit, and on the other hand, it still remains necessary to attain the spiritual goal. The poems discussed here are problematizing the consciousness of dying, the reach a spiritual goal. The poems analyzed in the article problematize the awareness of dying, constitute a record of struggle waged against oneself, the matter of the poem, the burden of tradition, and the limitations of the body. Their rickety rhythm, peculiar punctuation (ellipses, aposiopesis, enjambments) and traces left on the manuscripts harmonize with the trauma of physical suffering and disease. In Słowacki’s poems, the entanglement of the "I" within corporality - constrained, tormented, heterogeneous, suffering - and this wrestling of the “I” with the body appears to be an antecedent of phenomena typical for modern poetry.
