The poetry of Seamus Heaney in Roman Sabos Polish translation
The paper examines the translation techniques of Roman Sabo, a Polish poet living in Vancouver in Canada. The author bases her analysis and siscussion on Sabo's translations of a select group of poems by S. Heaney. In order to arrive at the specifics of Sabo's methods, she juxtaposes his translationas with renderings of the some poems by Stanisław Barańczak and Magdalena Heydel. Budzik underscores Sabo's care in seeking Polish equivalents of the rhythmic structure and the verbal orchesttration of the originals, of various forms of iconicity and, conversely, of effects achieved by simplicity and precision of diction - all of which characterize Heaney's poetic crsft. She also considers the cultural context of Heaney's poetry, an acquaintance with is cital for a full understanding of the poetry. Here, Sabo's lengthy stay in Ireland and his Irish family connections stand him in good stead.
