Purpose: The objective of the article is to present the results of the author's own empirical research devoted to assessing the current and desired model of organisational culture according to Polish SME sector employees. The research was also promoted by the urge to assess the occurrence of some statistically significant dependencies existing between a declared model of the organisational culture and a perceived current level of respondents' motivation. Design/methodology/approach: Two research tools were used in the research process, namely: the Organisational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI) by Cameron and Quinn and the author's own questionnaire, to assess occurrence and intensity of any dysfunctional phenomena at the workplace as well as the level of motivation. Statistical analyses of significant differences between variables were conducted based on Pearson's chi square test of independence. Findings: The research results show that the model of organisational culture which, according to respondents, existed at their organisation at the time of the research is different depending on the size of an enterprise (with the exception of microenterprises and small enterprises). Moreover, the model of the organisational culture only in medium-sized enterprises has a statistically significant impact on the degree of employee motivation. Research/practical implications: First, it would be necessary to conduct a cyclical research of employee preferences in order to identify the current and desirable model of organisational culture in the effort to create the friendliest work environment (the majority of employees' shows a definitely higher preference for the clan culture features than for the market culture and hierarchy). Important is also, that the organisational culture model is not the key factor which determines the level of employees' motivation. Originality/value: The article presents the results of empirical research conducted by the author, which open new directions for scientific inquires focused on issues related to the organisational culture and its impact on the degree of motivation in employees working for enterprises from the SME sector as well as in large enterprises.
