Secular elements in front and back matters of 17th-century church books in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (selected examples)

Teksty ramy wydawniczej druków religijnych, w tym cerkiewnych były komponowane przez świeckich i duchownych autorów, którzy tak dobierali ich treści by były użyteczne dla odbiorcy tych ksiąg. Świeccy przedmówcy podejmowali problematykę teologiczną, obrzędowo-liturgiczną nawet w dedykacjach do świeckich patronów. Dedykacje pisane przez hierarchów i kierowane do świeckich patronów często wychwalały ich stałość w wierze, obronę Cerkwi, niekiedy laudacja była przekierowana na duchownego przedstawiciela rodu. W wielu przedmowach oraz modlitewnych dedykacjach eksponowano postać króla jako patrona Cerkwi, w 2. poł. XVII w. na Lewobrzeżnej Ukrainie - cara. Świeckie elementy w księgach tego typu, to także modyfikacje popularnych literackich konwencji, np. przekształcenie wiesza herbowego czy tytułowej formuły dedykacyjnej na modlitwę. Istnieje zatem wyraźnie tendencja, aby zawartość tekstu nawiązywała do zasadniczej problematyki drukowanej księgi, uwzględniała jej funkcję oraz duchowe, intelektualne czy oświatowe potrzeby jej założonego odbiorcy.

The text of front and back matter in religious prints (including the liturgical one) were composed by laity and clergy authors who were selecting their content, so that they are useful for the recipient of these books. Lay speakers undertook theological issues, ritual and liturgical even in dedications to lay patrons. Dedications written and directed by the hierarchy to lay patrons often praised their constancy in faith and defense of the Church, sometimes laudation was redirected to the clerical representative of the family. In many prefaces and prayer dedications exposed figure of the king as the patron of the Orthodox Church, in the 2nd half of 17th century on the Left-Bank Ukraine - tsar. Secular elements in the books of this type, it is also enhancements to the popular literary conventions, e.g. converting heraldic verses, or title formula of dedication to prayer. There is therefore clear tendency that the content of the text referred to the fundamental issues of edited book, takes into account its function and the spiritual, intellectual and educational needs of its established audience.
