THE HISTORY OF EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

The aim of the article is to describe the educational system of Nigeria. First the author gives a short outline of the history of education from the activity of missionaries in the nineteenth century, changes in educational structure during the colonial rule, through the period of getting independence till today. In the following sections he illustrates the modern educational system in context of social changes and show the relation between the institutions which are responsible for the national education. In the concluding part of the article he shows the condition of the Nigerian education today, the most important challenges and possible solutions for the system of education.
