The experiments were performed in farms in which outbreaks and losses of chickens caused by a transovarial infection of Salmonella gallinarum were noted. In three flocks in which Baytril 10% at a dose of 0.5 ml/L of drinking water was used a mean indice of losses after treatment was 8.4®/». In the control flock in which other drugs were used this indice reached 17.5%. In three farms in which Baytril was applied prophy- lactically for 3 or 5 first days of chicken life at a dose of 0.5 ml/L of drinking water a mean indice of chicken losses during a whole period of fattening was 4.8% and the end body weight was 1.95 kg. In these same farms in 8 earlier cycles of production a mean indice of chicken losses was higher (10.8%) and the end body weight was 1.88 kg. The antibiotic sensitivity test revealed that 4 strains of S. gallinarum and 11 strains of S. enteritidis were susceptible to enrofloxacin (active substance of Baytril) and that these strains differed in their susceptibility to other antibacterial drugs.
