Cadmium content was determined in the hair of 46 breast-feeding mothers and their infants, and in the hair of 47 formula-fed infants receiving modified bovine milk blends. Admissible cadmium concentrations were exceeded in all examined groups. Cadmium concentrations in the hair of the breast-fed infants (0.38 µg/g dry mass) were significantly higher than the corresponding values for their mothers (0.11 µg/g dry mass). There was a significant (r = 0.44) correlation between cadmium content in the hair of the breast feeding mothers and in the hair of their infants during the first 6 months of infants' life. In both infant groups, hair cadmium concentrations were higher during the first 6 than during the next 6 months of infant life. No significant effect of the feeding method on infant hair cadmium content was noted.
