Ocular lens diameter as an age indicator in two teleost fishes collected from Basrah waters [Iraq]

The ocular lens diameter of the teleost fishes Heteropneustes fossilis and Ilisha elongata was used as an age indicator. The results showed that this technique could be adopted for estimating the age of individuals of these two species.

Osobniki Heteropneustes fossilis były łowione w rzece Qaramat Ali na północ od Basra a Ilisha elongata były odławiane na obszarze Khor al-Zubair na północnym zachodzie od Zatoki Arabskiej. Sprawdzono użyteczność pomiarów średnicy soczewki oka jako wskaźnika wieku dla dwóch badanych gatunków ryb (ryc. 1-4). Wykazano, że ta technika może być stosowana przy określaniu wieku H. fossilis i I.elongata.
