The name of Amadée François Frezier, French engineer, soldier and sailor, undoubtedly has been forgotten throughout passing centuries. If only he is mentioned today it is due to his sea expeditions. He was active in the decades of Luis XIV and Luis XV reign. He was a typical Renaissance individual gifted with lots of talents and abilities. His credits for development of descriptive geometry and its engineering application are hardly ever mentioned. His fundamental work entitled „La théorie et la practique de la coupe des pierres et des bois pour la construction des voûtes et autres parties des bâtiments civils & militaires, ou Traité de stereotomie a l’usage de l’architecture” was edited in 3 volumes subsequently in 1737, 1738, and 1739. In the foreword to this manual the author stresses that inevitably engineering practice should firmly base on deep knowledge of geometrical constructions. To support his opinion he introduces theory of solids intersections and its application into architectural design and construction of vaults. It is probable that Gaspard Monge (1746 - 1818) who taught descriptive geometry at Military Academy in Mezieres (1789 - 1794) and next at École Polytechnique in Paris (1794 - 1809) must have known Frezier’s works before publishing his famous „La Géométrie Descriptive”.
