The origins of the Author’s interest in systems science and the influence of the system approach on the modeling of economic phenomena in transportation are discussed in the paper. The advantages and disadvantages of formal models are presented in the context of their computational complexity. This type discussion is necessary in case of qualitative effects’ modelling and in particular in case of modelling of the synergy effect intensity.
