Air pollution is nowadays a major environmental risk to health. Particulate matter is not the only air pollutant, however it is an important and convenient indicator of short- and long-term air quality. To take appropriate actions to improve air quality must be properly systematized knowledge on the subject. The publication provides information on sources of dust, classification and harmfulness of suspended matter. The legal situation of air pollution and dust permitted levels were presented. Also WHO's data on concentrations of particulate matter in the world were brought closer.
