Trwałość konstrukcji stalowych jest między innymi związana z rodzajem konstrukcji, w tym: kształtem elementów i węzłów, możliwością i sposobem zabezpieczenia jej przed korozją i ogniem oraz utrzymaniem jej w całym „cyklu życia” obiektu. Przy doborze przekrojów elementów i kształtowaniu węzłów należy uwzględniać: możliwość łatwego oczyszczania ich powierzchni, skuteczność nanoszenia powłok ochronnych oraz możliwość samoczynnego utrzymania powierzchni bez brudu i wilgoci. Z kolei z uwagi na ochronę ppoż. istotne jest ograniczenie ekspozycji pojedynczego elementu i konstrukcji w taki sposób, by konstrukcja spełniła swoje zadania w wymaganym czasie.
Durability of steel structures is, among other things, related to the type of construction, including shape of the members and nodes, possibility and method of protecting against corrosion and fire and maintaining throughout the whole ‘life cycle’ of the structure. The selection of the cross-section of members and the shape of nodes should take into account: the possibility of easy cleaning of their surfaces, the effectiveness of the application of protective coatings and the possibility of self-maintenance of the surface free of dirt and moisture. In turn, for fire protection reasons, it is important to limit the exposure of a single member and structure in such a way that the structure fulfils its purpose in the required duration.
