The modal split of traffic in the European cities

The modal split of traffic is the result of choices made by people travelling. Subjective choices made by individuals result in the split between different means of transport (mobility patterns) in a given area. With this respect, the division of transport tasks can be understood as an assessment of activities implemented at the level of a city, region and a country. Shaping the transport policy to promote environmentally friendly modes of travelling is a challenge for cities in Europe and in the world. The article attempts presenting changes within past several years in the modal split in selected European cities. It takes into consideration several external factors and examines relations between those factors and the share of particular modes of transport in the total traffic in Europe in general and in selected cities in particular.

Podział modalny ruchu stanowi rezultat wyborów osób podróżujących. Indywidualne wybory zależne od subiektywnych ocen w sumie tworzą rozkład podróży na środki transportu, którego wymiar może pomóc w ocenie aktywności realizowanych na poziomie miejskim, regionalnym i krajowym. Kształtowanie polityki transportowej w kierunku promowania proekologicznych sposobów podróżowania stanowi wyzwanie dla współczesnych europejskich i światowych miast. Artykuł prezentuje zmiany na przestrzeni kilku ostatnich lat, jakie dokonały się w podziałach modalnych wybranych 318 miast europejskich. Przedstawiono także kilka czynników zewnętrznych i określono przykładowe zależności między nimi i podziałem modalnym ruchu.
