Identification of gaps in the awareness of firefighter rescuers regarding factors affecting their psychophysical well-being

The article presents issues related to factors that may have a negative impact on the well-being and psychophysical fitness of firefighter rescuers. The aim of the study was to identify gaps in the awareness of firefighter rescuers and diagnose problems that firefighters face during their work. An attempt was also made to plan actions intended to improve the psychophysical well-being of the rescuers. The contemporary work of firefighters and the environment in which they operate on a daily basis brings with it numerous challenges and stress factors that affect the quality of life. A key factor determining the ability to act effectively in stressful situations includes, among others, the awareness of one’s own skills and needs. Identifying gaps in awareness, and thus understanding the factors affecting this awareness, is a basis for developing tools that enhance the psychophysical wellbeing of firefighters. The research process included an analysis of the subject literature as well as the development and conducting of a survey using written questionnaires with employees of the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Bielsko-Biala working in a shift system. The research results can be used to develop training strategy proposals, suggest measures aimed at improving working conditions, extend health prevention, and improve the awareness level of firefighters.
