The aim of the article is to present the problem concerning the application of the CMR (Convention on the Contract for the International Carriage of Goods by Road) to the road leg of multimodal transport. The problem is of great importance because there is no international convention regulating such a way of transport. The author analyses a few judgments given by the courts in different states which signed the CMR. The most important judgment is the decision of the English Court of Appeal relating to the Quantum case (Quantum Corporation Inc. & Others v. Plane Trucking Ltd. & Another) in which goods were transported by plane from Singapore to Paris and then by road and as a ro-ro to Dublin. The court concluded that the last leg of the transport was ruled by the CMR. The author agrees with the court’s decision and the similar decisions of other courts. In his opinion the CMR is applicable even when a carrier undertakes to carry by some other means of carriage than a trailer but reserves either a general or limited option to carry by road.
