Political and military changes undergoing in Eastern and Central Europe after 1956, called a thaw, were watched with a great attention in the West. Information received by intelligence sources and also from so called „white intelligence” was the subject of Western analyses. The presented material, evaluating the changes undergoing in the Eastern block armies, was published in American military magazine - „Military Review” (no. 6) in September 1958. Polish translation was made in then existing Department II of the Polish General Staff and sent (7 January 1959) to the Polish minister of national defence, Gen. Marian Spychalski.
