W niniejszym artykule starano się przedstawić analizę funkcjonowania największego portu morskiego w Europie - portu Rotterdam, ponadto omówiono strategię jego rozwoju na przyszłość, a także wykorzystanie nowoczesnych technologii w jego funkcjonowaniu (przeładunek kontenerów w porcie) i rozbudowywaniu (pozyskanie nowego obszaru portu Maasvlakte, Maasvlakte 2).

This article presents an analysis of the largest seaport in Europe, which is the bigger logistics and industrial hub in Europe. The port and industrial complex stretches over a length of about 40 kilometres and covers some 10,000 hectares (water and land). The throughput of almost 435 million tonnes in 2011 makes the port of Rotterdam by far the largest seaport in Europe. The port area of Rotterdam has excellent accessibility. In the coming years, the Port of Rotterdam will make investments to create sufficient capacity for this growth in the container segment. Port's objective is to use space efficiently and sustainably. They invest in extra space through the construction of Maasvlakte 2, and also in developing plots and properties to use the existing Rotterdam port area as efficiently as possible.
