The estimation of Fe3C particle density in steel by simple counting measurements made in plane sections.
A carbide dispersion in steel can be approximated by system of spheres with sphere density NV and volume fraction VV. Any plane section of the system is characterised by the profile density NA. If the sphere diameters follow the Rayleigh distribution a simple stereological equation, which satisfies the parameters NV, VV and NA, exists. If the volume fraction VV is known, this equation may be used for NV-estimation by profile counting in plane sections.
