Legislative framework for groundwater protection against chemical pollution and its links with analytical features regarding inorganic substances

The EU legislative and scientific framework for groundwater protection against chemical pollution covers a series of directives which ale supported by a range of related research projects. In this context, most of the legislative requirements ale based on the monitoring of chemical and/or physico-chemical parameters in groundwater which data ale used to c1assify the groundwater chemical status, identify pollution trends and assess the effectiveness of pollution protection measures. The soundness of policy decisions is therefore directly related to the reliability of groundwater chemical analyses, which reliability is in turn predominantly linked to scientific and technological progress. Analytical chemistry knowledge and developments have in this respect a direct link with the legislative framework. This artic1e summarises key information on EU groundwater policy and describes analytical chemical features related to inorganic substances in groundwater.
