Abiotic and biotic factors influencing biodeterioration of minerals in biohydrometallurgical processes

Microorganisms tan be at the basis of economic losses on account of their participation in the deterioration of different materials, including metals, rocks, concretes, the glass and organic materials. The same microorganisms tan be useful in biotechnological processes, eg using biohydrometallurgical methods of metals recovery from low-grade ores and metalliferous waste materials. The factors influencing these processes as well as the mechanisms of the mineral materials biodeterioration have been described. Some commercial operations of the selected metals bioleaching have also been presented.

Mikroorganizmy mogą być przyczyną strat ekonomicznych z powodu ich udziału w niszczeniu różnych materiałów, włączając metale, skały, betony, szkło i tworzywa organiczne. Te same mikroorganizmy mogą być przydatne w procesach biotechnologicznych, np. wykorzystujących metody biohydrometalurgii do pozyskania metali z ubogich rud i odpadów metalonośnych. W pracy przedstawiono czynniki wpływające na te procesy, a także niektóre komercyjne technologie bioługowania wybranych metali.
