Ewolucja znaczenia "modernizm" w architekturze. Próba uporządkowania pojęcia

Powstawanie, rozwój i przemijanie kolejnych nurtów w architekturze i sztuce od czasów dawnych po współczesne wynika ze zmagania się różnych, nieraz przeciwstawnych tendencji. Znaczenie określenia „modernizm" do dzisiaj prowokuje dyskusje. Autorka artykułu doszukuje się tendencji modernistycznych przede wszystkim w chęci zerwania z historią i wykorzystania postępu technicznego w architekturze. Wychodząc z tego założenia uznaje, że już architektura około 1900 jest wczesną odmianą modernizmu (secesja -oderwanie, Art. Nouveau - nowa sztuka itd.). Awangarda architektoniczna od lat 20 jest tworem dojrzałego modernizmu, a rzeźbiarska forma architektury począwszy od schyłku lat 50 i brutalizm, wpisuję się w schyłkową formę modernizmu.

Since the old days and as far as today, the emergence, development and passing of subsequent trends in architecture and in fine arts have all effected from the struggle of different, if not contradictory, tendencies. Even today the notion of 'modernism' arouses some stormy debates. The author has recognised the modernist tendencies mostly as the will to quit the past and to implement the technological progress in architecture. Having assumed this, she recognises the architecture of around the year 1900 as the early form of modernism (secession - breaking off, Art Nouveau - new art, etc.) The architectural avant-garde of the twenties was the offspring of the mature modernism while the sculpting shapes in architecture of the late fifties and the brutalism would mark the decaying stage of modernism.
